Mumford & Sons Donate North Carolina Concert Proceeds To Local LGBTQ Organization

first_imgWith Bruce Springsteen making headlines for cancelling a performance in North Carolina over the controversial HB2 law, many artists scheduled to play in the state have been reconsidering their performances. Mumford & Sons took a more active approach to protesting the law, by not only playing a sold out show at the Time Warner Center Arena but donating their profits to a local organization that supports LGBTQ rights.Read the band’s full statement below:Dear friends,We will be playing a show tomorrow in Charlotte, and recent events in North Carolina have got us talking a lot as a band the last few days, so we felt compelled to say something in advance to you.As a band that relishes welcoming everyone to our shows and promoting tolerance, we do want to take a stand with the people of North Carolina who this week are shouting loudly against intolerance, fear and discrimination.Over the years we’ve looked for ways to contribute to the vitality of local communities and, in that spirit, we’re now creating a charitable fund to support those who have made it their mission to pursue love and justice. We will be donating all of our profits from this show to this new fund. And we will start by making a donation from it to a local LGBTQ organisation. As always, we will open the doors to our show to anyone who wants to come, and are excited to get down with the people of Charlotte.M, B, W & Tlast_img read more

‘Sons of Champions’ boxing card set for boxing night

first_imgThe Guyana Boxing Association (GBA)/Briso Promotions Boxing Night card could see the outbreak of `World War Three’ as former national bantamweight champion, Clairmont Gibson, has threatened his nemesis, Keevin Allicock. The threat came after Allicock defeated Gibson to take the Terrence Ali National Open Bantamweight title; a title that Gibson held for a year.Allicock, however, is determined to hold on to the title, causing Gibson to declare `war’ on Tuesday night in the feature bout of the evening, which will have 11 amateur bouts, including one all-female clash. The 18-year-old Albouystown resident Allicock, who will be fighting out of the Forgotten Youth Foundation Boxing Gym (FYF), addressed the media yesterday at the Windjammer Hotel, saying that he is in fine condition. He said he is always prepared for any eventualities and come Tuesday night, he will give boxing buffs and his many supporters something to shout about.Gibson, who represents the Guyana Defence Force, in response to Allicock, said this is a rematch.Like Allicock, Gibson is urging boxing fans and supporters to come out in their numbers.Present at the press conference yesterday were GBA president Steve Ninvalle; head of Briso Promotions group, Seon Bristol; and GBA’s technical director, Terrence Poole. In opening remarks, Ninvalle said his association has been working very hard to make the card a reality with quality fights throughout the night (Tuesday), and while it is the association’s first approach, the partnership between the GBA and Briso Promotions will make it an annual one.Ninvalle informed that what was to have been the feature bout on the night’s card between Dennis Thomas and Desmond Amsterdam, will be no more as Thomas has not been given time off from his employer–the Guyana Police Force–to prepare for the contest, due mainly in part to him being required to be on duty during the Christmas holiday season. However, Thomas’ place will be taken by Aluko Best who lost to Thomas at the Terrence Ali National Open Championships last month and according to Poole, he (Best) would definitely not want to lose against Amsterdam.Bristol in brief remarks said he is happy to be a part of the GBA’s first Boxing Day tournament, as he is here in Guyana to build amateur boxing. He said the pugilists will receive trophies, medals and a small token at the end of the contests.Ninvalle also explained that over the past month the fighters that will be on show come Tuesday night have been exposed to two important competitions – the National Open Championships as well as the Caribbean Championships, where Guyana won three gold medals and a silver “and now they will be involved in the ‘Sons of Champions’ Championships.”last_img

It also helps that Mortion has dominated this year, going 7-0 with a 2.30 ERA and 91 strikeouts over 74.1 innings.C: Brian McCann, Braves vs. Pirates. McCann is always a solid option given the price point and upside in the Braves lineup. McCann is hitting .284 with three home runs and an OPS of .763. In his past two starts he has collected four hits in eight at-bats.MORE MONDAY MLB: SP rankings | Betting picks1B: Josh Bell, Pirates @ Braves. Bell is slowing down a bit here, hitting just .260 with one home run over his past 10 games. Despite the current struggles I can see him having a solid night against a bad Kevin Gausman, who is 2-5 with a 6.15 ERA.2B: DJ LeMahieu, Yankees vs. Mets DJLM is hitting .356 with an OPS of 1.040 over the past 10 games. Against LHP this season, LeMahieu is hitting .347 with an OPS of .906. Are we really going to trust that Jason Vargas is going to be shutting out teams on the regular right now?SS: Corey Seager, Dodgers @ Angels. Seager is smoking it right now, hitting .462 with five doubles and one home run over the past week. He was once a .300 hitter with 20-plus HR upside but injuries have slowed him down. He is looking healthy and worth the price. CJ. Alfaro (R)[email protected] 7:10M. Land claimants eye eco-tourism

first_img12 July 2005A R150-million investment could turn a poor community of 5 000 households into one of the richest in Mpumalanga’s Nkomazi region. The Lugedlane community was recently given the 3 852-hectare Ludwichlust Farm, which is worth R24-million, after lodging a successful land claim. Now Sandton-based developers Hanrob CC and Associates are offering to turn the farm into a R150-million five-star eco-tourism destination, complete with two hotels, a golf course, 30 corporate lodges, 400 residential houses, a school, clinic, a resort on the Crocodile River and a community complex.“This project will contribute to achieving successful land reform in South Africa as a result of sustainable development of the land,” said Hanrob spokesperson Hennie Joubert. The farm borders the N4 highway and part of the Kruger National Park along a strip of the Crocodile River.“We want to make this development an international benchmark for best practice in effective community partnerships in the tourism sector,” Joubert said.Frank Lesenyego, spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Land Claims Commission, confirmed that the community had signed a memorandum of understanding with Hanrob. An initial investment of R50-million will kick-start the project later this year.Construction should be complete by 2009, and the entire project is then expected to generate profits in the region of R10-million a year.During construction, an estimated 4 020 jobs will be created. The total number of permanent jobs to be created is expected to reach 1 020.“Job creation, ploughing back resources and sustainable development are part of the philosophy of our company and part of the way we see our country moving towards broad based black economic empowerment in this successful tourist enterprise,” said Joubert.Source: BuaNews Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

Africa is future for software entrepreneurs

first_img22 June 2015Software and Africa are going to be a very interesting combination in the future, Meltwater founder and chief executive Jørn Lyseggen has said. For Lyseggen, the world had to consider the “incredible fact” that by 2040, 50% of the world’s working population – between the ages of 18 and 60 – would be in Africa. “Africa will play a very incredible role in future politics on the global scene,” he said. “As a continent, I think it has a lot of potential.”In 2008, Lyseggen launched the Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (Mest) and the Mest Incubator programme in Ghana, which provides training, investment and mentoring for aspiring technology entrepreneurs. His goal is to create globally successful companies that create wealth and jobs locally in Africa.Training software entrepreneurs for AfricaLyseggen said he had been to Africa more than 50 times since 2007 for philanthropic purposes – wanting to build schools for software entrepreneurs. But he soon realised just how much potential its people had. “I see so much talent and I see so many driven people and there is no question in my mind that all the up-and- coming youth in Africa are going to make a big impact also in the software space.”Thirty of the Entrepreneurs-In-Training selected each year to attend Mest are top graduates from Ghana and Nigeria. They receive comprehensive training across the spectrum of skills required to build successful tech businesses, including computer programming, software development, product management, finance, marketing, sales and leadership best practices.Lyseggen warns budding entrepreneurs that the path can be hard. “It’s very taxing. For many it means you go from hand-to-mouth and you make very little money for many years,” he said.“For some other people they will start out successfully. If you want to go into entrepreneurship, I think it’s a very good thing and I encourage everyone to do it. but you need to embrace that it is not going to be a picnic.”The perfect employeeWhen recruiting employees to work at Meltwater, Lyseggen said he looked for inspiring people who were ambitious, talented, driven and capable. “But also positive people who are fun to hang around and also have a good heart, good values and good integrity.”People who have managed to break through in a particular field at an early age are key to the type of employee he seeks. “We have people who are classically trained pianists. [and] others who are exceptional in sport,” he said.“So, we have national or international champions in swimming, cycling, running, skiing [and] we have three Olympians in the company. We have a world champion fly fisher in the company. “One time I hired a Chinese girl who was number three in the world in Street Fighter 2, the game. We believe it says something about who you are. Whatever you put your mind to, you will probably be very successful.”Source: News24Wirelast_img read more

2 Billion Downloads Later, Apple’s App Store is Still Going Strong

first_imgApple today announced that a total of 2 billion apps have now been downloaded from the App Store. There are now over 85,000 apps in the store, up from 65,000 on July 14, and the number of developers has grown from 100,000 in July to around 125,000 today. iPhone and iPod touch users now download close to 6.6 million apps every day and this number continues to grow. The App Store is obviously one of Apple’s most important assets in the mobile market. While Microsoft’s Zune HD, for example, is getting a lot of favorable reviews, the absence of an application ecosystem makes it a far less compelling product than Apple’s more expensive iPod touch product line. On the iPhone side of things, competitors like Windows Mobile, Android, and Nokia also have nothing to offer that comes close to matching Apple’s App Store – even if we assume that a lot of these 85,000 programs are fart apps and single-book eBook apps. This kind of transparency is obviously not in Apple’s DNA, so we depend on data from third-party services like AdMob for this information. According to AdMob, iPod touch and iPhone users are more likely to buy apps than users of any other mobile platform and are also more likely to interact with mobile ads. For developers, no matter the grumblings about the App Store approval process, the App Store is simply the largest and most lucrative marketplace for their work right now. frederic lardinoislast_img read more

Police Arrest 5 Men Over “Anonymous” DDoS Attacks

first_imgRelated Posts Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Tags:#news#NYT#web British police have arrested five people for their alleged participation in some of the highly publicized DDoS attacks last month. The five individuals – all males, between the ages of 15 and 26 – were arrested after a series of raids in the West Midlands, Northamptonshire, Herfordshire, Surrey and London. The five are being held on suspicion of being involved in Anonymous, the loose affiliation of so-called hacktivists who have targeted a number of websites, including MasterCard, Visa and PayPal, with distributed denial of service attacks. These attacks followed WikiLeaks’ release of U.S. diplomatic cables in late November, and were aimed to punish companies who’d shut down WikiLeaks’ access to financial resources.According to Scotland Yard, the arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into Anonymous: “This investigation is being carried out in conjunction with international law enforcement agencies in Europe and the U.S.” DDoS attacks are illegal in the U.K. under the Computer Misuse Act.These aren’t the first arrests associated with Anonymous. Two Dutch teens were arrested shortly following the initial spate of attacks, and although no arrests have yet been announced from it, the FBI raided a Texas-based Web host in late December seeking more information about Anonymous activity.Recently, Anonymous has aimed its attacks on government websites in Tunisia, Egypt and Zimbabwe, in response to political uprisings there. Later Galaxy S10 patent shows Xiaomi phone screen with four curved edges

first_img See it 1 An illustration of a mock Xiaomi phone with a curved screen that goes all the way around. LetsGoDigital Since the Galaxy Edge came out in 2014, Samsung’s flagship phones have had curved edges on the right and left sides of the screen. The effect when you hold a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy Note 9 is that it feels like you’re kind of holding the internet right in your hand. The upcoming Galaxy S10 is expected to have the same curved right and left edges. But what about the top and bottom edges? On Tuesday, Chinese phone maker Xiaomi had a patent published for a phone screen with four curved edges (top, bottom and sides). As reported by Dutch website LetsGoDigital, the patent was published in the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) Global Design Database. The included illustration shows a mock blue Xiaomi phone with the four-sided curved display. It looks absolutely gorgeous. However it’s not real. At least for now.The patent illustration also raises a few questions:There’s no notch, so where does the selfie camera go?There areno buttons on the sides, so how do you sleep and wake it?Also, how do you secure the phone? Perhaps there’s a fingerprint reader under the screen?Obviously, patents need to be taken with a grain of salt. But I am hopeful that a phone with such a display will one day be a reality. Until then, I’m going to get lost down the rabbit hole that is foldable phone screens.Xiaomi did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
