School Soccer: How Emma Okwuokei, Ben Popoola Helped St. Thomas Aquinas…

first_imgBy Tony EluemunorHey, let’s jolt some memories and challenge administrators to enhance sports facilities in secondary schools or Nigeria will ever remain feeble in sports.Once, secondary school sports competitions thrived. Catching sports greats young was no empty phrase then. Fully elected sports officials organized Local Council competitions, and from there deserving students represented the LGAs in zonal and state competitions. The state representatives would then meet at the Zonal tests (Nigeria was divided into four zones) and from there qualifiers would compete at the national Hussey Shield (for boys) and Lady Manuwa Cup (for girls) and Grier Cup competitions. Then, the sprinter Peter Ofili, and footballers such as Clement Okwufuleze, (alias Piccolo), Ogbueze, Kizito Oshodi, Emilo John, Nnamdi Nwokocha, goalkeeper Raph Uweche (Bastic), etc, were household names while they were students.Vice-Principal Fawehinmi (standing left in native dress and cap) and Principal Evans (standing right in shirt and trouser) with the football teamThe Daily Times of Friday September 28, 1951 published this: “But the event that I shall always remember most is the 220 yards relay, which was won by St Gregory’s College from King’s College by inches. The third lap of this relay produced a terrible duel between Ibisi (St Greg’s) and Idowu (King’s College); and in the last leg, Abengowe had the baton ten yards ahead of Munis, the frail sprinter from St Gregory’s. I had run the second leg and was looking forward to a King’s College victory in record-breaking time (the record then stood at 1’ 36” held by Government College Ibadan). I remember our Games Master, Mr. J. A. Ojo, turning his back to the track and muttering in Yoruba “Otan” (it is finished). But what was that? Munis was fast gaining on Abengowe. On and on came the wonderful Munis who now appeared to be running on air, on and on until he passed Abengowe at the tap in 1’ 37.2”. That was from the great musicologist and sports analyst, late Prof. Sam Akpabot, and he wrote about the Grier Cup Competition of 1946.Even in 1969, as the Civil War raged, competitions held. Hey, I am writing a book on St. Anthony’s College, Ubulu-Uku, my alma mater (Latin for “nourishing or bountiful mother.”). The school scored 100 per cent in the West African School Certificate exam and won the Giwa-Osagie Football Cup for Mid-West Secondary Schools in 1969, but I should save further materials for my book. I could focus on Immaculate Conception College, Benin-City which Josiah Dombraye played for same year, or the formidable Hussey College, Warri where he went to for his HSC and teamed up with other schoolboy greats – Morton Owolo, Didiare, Clement Okwufulueze (from Anglican Grammar School, Ubulu-Uku), Adinkwe, Opone, Gigi Donbraye, Thompson Usiyan, Zion Ogunfehimi (goalkeeper) Franklin Howard, Clement Temile, Mike Obiku, and John Umugheli , in the 1970 team. But I’ll leave out Mid-West totally. So, let’s turn to 1969 Western State school soccer champions; St. Thomas Aquinas College, Akure that won the Omitola Football Cup. The old Western state comprised of today’s Oyo, Ondo, Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states.Mr. Emma Okwuokei had finished from St. Michael’s Secondary School, Ogwashi Uku, in 1968 and was in Aquina’s in Akure for HSC; his elder brother, Charles (ex-Anthony’s Ubulu-Uku) was a Policeman in the town. He said Aquinas was by then a sports power house, “always in contention with local rival, Oyemakun Grammar School.”1969; Thomas Aquinas had beaten all the other zonal schools, Ondo Boys’ High School, Ekiti Parapo Grammar School, C.K. C Ado-Ekiti, Manuwa Memorial Grammar School, Ijuodo, near Okitipupa, etc and met another Akure school, Oyemakun Grammar School at the zonal finals. Mr. Okwuokei’s face lit up ashe reminisced: “The rivalry between the two schools divided the entire town. People thronged our matches. As we filed out into the field for that match, I led my team. I can never forget that day, even if I were to live for a thousand years. I scored the lone goal. I was carried shoulder high by the other students for the four kilometre walk, a triumphant march, through the centre of the town to our school. We walloped Victory College, Ikare, 2-0, and also beat Baptist Ejigbo”.The final was at the Liberty Stadium, Ibadan and against Baptist High School, Abeokuta which produced the Afro-beat king, Fela Anikulapo Kuti, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Head of the Interim National Government, Ernest Shoneikan and MKO Abiola. Final scores: Thomas Aquinas, Akure 2, Baptist Abeokuta 1. Mrs Omitola, the wife of the thenMrs Omitola handing the Cup to St. Thomas Aquinas Captain.Western state’s Commissioner of Police, Francis Omitola, presented the Cup to the winners.Okwuokei was invited to the Western State Academicals camp. That great Ibadan football club, the fore-runner of the IICC, the WNDC (Western Nigeria Development Cooperation invited him too. Please note that Okwuokei did not beg or bribe any coach or official for the invitations.Okwuokei’s team included Ben Popoola, whom he said was a truly gifted footballer: “It was clear to us that Ben would go places, and he did. He not only played for Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin in its glorious days, but he played for the national football team then known as the Green Eagles. Popoola was about the youngest He was a great dribbler that often wriggled his way through a defence, no matter how tight, only to get us a much-needed goal or create a chance for another to score. He was a remarkable schemer. He had that ‘don’t dirty me’ style that made him to avoid injurious contact with defenders. Here is Reuters’ report of Green Eagles match against Ivory Coast on 14th July 1974; “substitute player Ben Popoola opened the scoring in the 70th minute with a fast low shot into a corner of the net. The goal obviously boosted the Eagles’ morale and in the 88th minute forward striker Sunday Izevbigie netted the second goal”. Both scorers belonged to Bendel Insurance of Benin.Mr. Okuwokei, from Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha LGA of Delta state, left competitive soccer after that. He is retired from the Nigerian Customs, and lives in Asaba. He remembers the school Captain, Boone Fawahinmi, Assistant Captain, Uche Okoko (from Asaba) and his brother Madu Okoko (the goalkeeper) Tunde Ashagba (Akplasima), the team’s hard-tackling defender from Ondo and one Adebayo. On how to replicate the glorious days of secondary school sports, Mr. Okwuokei who also represented the school and later the Zone in Javelin and Pole-Vault, said that schools require good sports facilities.“We had a very nice field, the school was managed by the Irish missionaries. The boarding house system ensured that we had enough time for sports training as it brings a large number of students together, they live in close proximity. He said the teachers were committed – Principal Evans, Vice-Principal Fatoyibo the rest of the teachers. It all begins from school, that is where Jamaica spots its sprinters. It once fed our national team. We must go back to the grassroots. Then Nigeria must strengthen its national league”.* Tony Eluemunor, a leading authority on the Presidency, lives in Abuja.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

Oklahoma State offers 2017 QB Myles Brennan

first_imgThings just got very interesting on the recruiting trail for Oklahoma State. The Cowboys have one commitment in the 2017 class at quarterback, in 6-foot-7 Jelani Woods. And it appears they are now targeting a second signal-caller to come in on scholarship in the recruiting class, extending an offer to Myles Brennan, a record-setting prospect from Mississippi.https://twitter.com/mylesbrennan12/status/803767537917890560Brennan picked up his offer from OSU yesterday, and today, announced that he was backing away from his commitment to the LSU Tigers, where had originally committed during the Les Miles era.Brennan made a visit to Stillwater 8 months ago, coming away without an offer — but it was clear interest was mutual after his visit. “It feels like one big family. They’re definitely a great fit,” Brennan told me after his visit, adding that he could “definitely see himself fitting in here in Stillwater pretty well.”Brennan made a 12-hour drive on his own dime to see Stillwater on an unofficial basis. OSU went in a different direction and accepted a commitment from Woods, a dual-threat QB from Ellenwood, Georgia, however, one source tells me that with former walk-on Nyc Burns leaving, the quarterback recruiting has taken a turn — and the goal is to take two quarterbacks in the 2017 class. At 6-foot-3, 185-pounds, Brennan fits the mold of a pocket passer that would complement Woods in the class to round out a good core. He is an Under Armour All-American, and four-star prospect who also attended the Elite 11 earlier this year, where the group of top quarterbacks gather to compete. On LSU’s end, it appears head coach Ed Orgeron has apparently elected to take a dual-threat quarterback to run the offense, with Lowell Narcisce committed in the class, and the Tigers extending an offer to Alabama commit Tua Tagovailoa. With rumors that LSU may be targetting Lane Kiffin as the new OC, things opened up for Brennan. And it appears at the moment, Oklahoma State has stolen the recruiting momentum. With Brennan’s offer now on the table, don’t be surprised to see, if he does pick OSU, a decision to be made in the coming weeks. All his previous offers were handed out and may not still be on the table, but OSU’s may be the most “committable” at the moment. It will be interesting to see what, if any, impact it has on Jelani Woods and the rest of the class if things work out between OSU and Brennan. Valverde sees Coutinho & Dembele progress

first_imgPhilippe Coutinho Coutinho & Dembele took step forward in Barcelona win, says Valverde Dom Farrell Last updated 1 year ago 09:36 25/2/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) Philippe Coutinho Barcelona Lionel Messi Ernesto Valverde Luis Suárez Ousmane Dembélé Barcelona v Girona Girona Primera División Videos Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi may have orchestrated the Blaugrana’s comeback against Girona, but the coach reserved praise for his side’s big signings Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde was proud to see Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele contribute to his side’s 6-1 win over Girona on Saturday and feels the pair are progressing well.Valverde started Coutinho, Dembele, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez together for the first time and he was buoyed by the efforts of this season’s two blockbusting signings.Coutinho opened his La Liga account with an excellent long-range strike, while both he and Dembele set up Luis Suarez on his way to a hat-trick, with Lionel Messi netting twice. Editors’ Picks Williams case shows Solskjaer isn’t holding Man Utd’s youngsters back – he’s protecting them Goalkeeper crisis! Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp And while Messi and Suarez took most plaudits for turning the result around after Girona’s early opening goal, Valverde feels things are coming together with Dembele and Coutinho.”When a player scores as Coutinho did he gains more and more confidence, which is what a player is always looking for,” he told reporters.”They are players who have to help us and who are already doing it, each with their own characteristics.”Dembele has a more extreme profile, he brings more depth [to Barcelona’s play] but he has had problems with injuries and skipped that period of adaptation. That’s why he’s still getting used to the team.”Coutinho plays very well in the inside game. I think both have taken a step forward today.”As well as his goal scoring heroics, Suarez’s actions towards the end of the game became the subject of debate. Some observers alleged Suarez was trying to get a yellow card that would have resulted in a suspension for Thursday’s trip to Las Palmas, clearing his disciplinary slate for Atletico Madrid’s crunch visit to Camp Nou next weekend.Referee Javier Alberola showed leniency with Suarez but Spain left-back Jordi Alba will miss the Las Palmas game after he was carded for bringing down Pablo Maffeo.Asked about the events during the final minutes, Valverde said: “They are moments of the game and the referee decides.”I have nothing to say about that. If we have a setback due to an accumulation of bookings, another player will play. We’ll decide what we do.”last_img read more

Report: Roma 0 AC Milan 2

first_imgRoma 0 AC Milan 2: Cutrone and Calabria secure superb win for Rossoneri Guy Atkinson Last updated 1 year ago 05:41 26/2/2018 Patrick Cutrone - cropped Getty Images AC Milan’s fine form in Serie A continued as a superb second-half display saw off an out-of-sorts Roma. AC Milan stretched their unbeaten run in Serie A to eight games as Patrick Cutrone and Davide Calabria sealed a 2-0 win over Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.Gennaro Gattuso’s side were second best during a poor first half but came out for the second period rejuvenated and secured all three points thanks to their young stars.Their more adventurous approach bore fruit after 48 minutes when Cutrone got a delicate touch to Suso’s cross, which flashed past Alisson. Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp Milan had further chances to add a second before the unlikely figure of Calabria added gloss to the scoreline with a composed finish in the 74th minute. The win sets Milan up perfectly for a big week, which sees them face Lazio in a Coppa Italia semi-final second leg on Wednesday before a crunch derby with Inter four days later.Roma, meanwhile, will need to pick themselves up quickly after a second consecutive defeat ahead of a daunting trip to Napoli next weekend.74′ AND @davidecalabria2 MAKES IT TWO!!!! Il raddoppio rossonero con un gran gol di Davide!!! Dai ragazzi!!!!! ️ #RomaMilan 0-2 pic.twitter.com/1tvqQquMrI — AC Milan (@acmilan) February 25, 2018 Roma started with a spring in their step and tested Gianluigi Donnarumma – celebrating his 19th birthday – twice inside the opening 10 minutes through Cengiz Under and Diego Perotti.Milan soon settled, however, and largely kept their hosts at arm’s length for large swathes of the first half. When Roma did threaten, Lorenzo Pellegrini was at the heart of it. The 21-year-old midfielder had a penalty appeal waved away before flashing a shot wide of Donnarumma’s right-hand post as the half ended goalless. In stark contrast to their tepid first-half display, Milan started the second period with verve and swagger and were rewarded with the opening goal after just three minutes.Cutrone found Suso on the right and then stormed into the box to meet the Spaniard’s teasing cross with an impudent flick past Alisson for his sixth Serie A goal of the season.48′ GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAL! Patrick!!!!CUTRONEEEE! Vantaggio rossonero! ️ #RomaMilan 0-1 pic.twitter.com/raTN3gmnax — AC Milan (@acmilan) February 25, 2018 Perotti then drilled a long-range effort just wide as Roma attempted to restore parity, while Alisson had to be alert to parry over Franck Kessie’s powerful drive as Milan looked to double their advantage. The shackles were well and truly off Milan’s players after Cutrone’s goal and Hakan Calhanoglu should have at least tested Alisson with a low drive just before the hour, instead dragging it wide.Substitute Nikola Kalinic should have wrapped it up with 20 minutes remaining but was denied by a smart one-handed save from Alisson. The Croatian made up it for it soon after, though, playing in the marauding Calabria who coolly clipped over the onrushing Roma goalkeeper for his first ever Serie A goal.Roma rarely looked like clawing their way back into the game in the closing stages as Milan – who could have had a third late on through Fabio Borini – comfortably held firm to register a memorable win. Key Opta Facts:- AC Milan have won an away league match against Roma for the first time since October 2011.- Patrick Cutrone has scored four goals in his last four Serie A games. His strike on Sunday was Milan’s first shot on target of the match.- Davide Calabria has scored his first goal for AC Milan (42 apps in all competitions).  read morelast_img read more

PAOK president apologises over gun

first_imgWTF PAOK president apologises after invading pitch with gun Dom Farrell Last updated 1 year ago 01:08 14/3/2018 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(0) WTF Super League 1 PAOK v AEK Athens PAOK AEK Athens After the Greek Superleague was suspended indefinitely, Ivan Savvidis could not help criticising the country’s football even as he tried to apologise PAOK president Ivan Savvidis has apologised for storming the field while armed with a gun during Sunday’s match against AEK Athens at the weekend – an incident that led to the Greek Superleague being suspended indefinitely by the country’s government.Savvidis invaded the pitch along with members of his security detail after PAOK’s Fernando Varela had what he thought was an 89th-minute winner rule out for offside. The Georgian-born tobacco and media tycoon was wearing a pistol in a holster on his hip, although he did not brandish it in the ensuing furore that saw AEK players leave the field before the match was abandoned at 0-0. Walker to the rescue but City sweating on Ederson injury ahead of Liverpool clash Out of his depth! Emery on borrowed time after another abysmal Arsenal display Diving, tactical fouls & the emerging war of words between Guardiola & Klopp Greece’s Deputy Minister of Sport George Vassiliadis announced on Monday that the country’s top flight was “on an indefinite interruption”, pending proposals from the Superleague and the Greek Football Federation (HFF).In a statement on PAOK’s official website, Savvidis offered a lengthy apology, albeit one peppered with references to what he believes to be a “totally ill soccer establishment” in his adopted country.”I want to apologise to all the fans of PAOK, all Greek fans, the global football community. I am very sorry for what happened. Clearly I did not have the right to go out on the pitch in this way,” Savvidis said.”My emotional reaction has been caused by the generalised negative situation prevailing in Greek football lately and by all the unacceptable, non-athletic events that took place towards the end of the PAOK-AEK – the actions of the referee and the supervisor (goal – offside – goal), the interruption of the match, the protests and the entry into the playing field of dozens of people of both teams.”Savvidis went on to claim his intention was to protect PAOK fans and made further allusions towards football in Greece being systematically unfair.”All of this created a degraded situation on the pitch and my only goal was to protect tens of thousands of PAOK fans from provocations – complications – human casualties,” he added.”Believe me, I had no intention of interference with the opposing team or the referees. And I certainly did not threaten anyone.”Unfortunately, both me and my family, as well as my colleagues, have been hostages of the totally ill soccer establishment.”I am struggling and will continue to strive, despite the constant attacks I take at all levels, for a fair football with honest arbitration in all the races and for winning the championships on the courts rather than in the courts.”Once again, I apologise.”Despite Savvidis’ apology, the European Club Association – the UEFA-recognised body representing the interests of professional clubs across the continent – has moved to suspend PAOK’s membership on account of his actions. In a statement, the ECA said it “strongly condemns” Savvidis’ behaviour and added: “In light of this, and in accordance with the ECA Statutes, the ECA Executive Board unanimously decided to suspend, with immediate effect, PAOK FC as member of the European Club Association.ήλωση Ιβάν Σαββίδη – https://t.co/NdmGjpgzd9 #PAOK #football #IvanSavvidis pic.twitter.com/BGRMN6rvnj — PAOK FC / ΠAOK (@PAOK_FC) March 13, 2018 “ECA exists to protect the integrity and regularity of competitions and matches as well as the sporting values and principles on which European football is based.”The suspension will be reported to the ECA general assembly in Roma on March 27.Controversy has marred Greek football over recent years.Games were suspended in all divisions after referee’s chief Giorgos Bikas was the victim of an arson attack in November 2016, while investigations into a match-fixing scandal that came to light in 2011 remain ongoing. Two weeks ago, PAOK’s home game with Olympiacos was abandoned before kick-off when visiting coach Oscar Garcia was struck by an object thrown from the stands. PAOK were initially docked three points but overturned the decision on appeal.last_img read more
