QPR have lost out to Crystal Palace in the battle to sign Cardiff City and England defender Steven Caulker, the Daily Mirror say. West London Sport recently revealed that Rangers were targeting Caulker and subsequently that they were in talks with him after meeting the £8m release clause in his contract.QPR are keen to sign CaulkerRangers were then widely touted as the favourites to sign him, with boss Harry Redknapp said to be increasingly confident of completing the transfer despite apparent interest from a number of other clubs, including Liverpool. However, it is now claimed that Palace manager Tony Pulis has persuaded Caulker, 22, to move to Selhurst Park in a club-record deal. The Hounslow-born player has reportedly been offered £42,000 a week by Palace – supposedly more than QPR are willing to pay him.Follow West London Sport on TwitterFind us on Facebook

A “sloppy and clumsy” India have handed England the advantage in the opening Test, says former captain Nasser Hussain who feels the world number ones did not show the “smart cricket” which propelled them to the top.England made 127/2 on a rain-hit opening day of the ongoing match at the Lord’s after Indians let slip the opportunity to grab more wickets.”This was a sloppy day for India -and, so early in the series, a big one for England. When Mahendra Singh Dhoni won a very important toss, you wondered what lay in store for the hosts’ batsmen under grey skies and against a swinging ball.To finish on 127 for two felt like a small triumph,” said Hussain.”They (the Indian bowlers) just weren’t full enough with the new ball, which should have been pitched up repeatedly to entice the drive. Too often they dropped short and wide.”The India captain did not have his best day in charge, either. He’s set himself high standards by winning just about everything he turns his mind to. But he missed a couple of tricks in the field and didn’t get a glove on a chance from Trott that flew between him and Rahul Dravid at first slip,” he explained.Former Captain Nasser HussainHussain said the Indians didn’t come across too eager on the field.”It all felt a bit clumsy from a team who have prided themselves on smart cricket during their rise to the top of the world rankings. But in some ways it’s not too much of a surprise,” Hussain said.advertisement”There’s been a piecemeal feel to the start of India’s tour. Some have arrived from the Caribbean, some haven’t played any first-class cricket since January, some have been playing in the IPL. It felt a bit like they were making it up as they went along yesterday,” he said.On Indian pace spearhead Zaheer Khan picking up a hamstring strain during the match, Hussain said it was a sign that the bowler is ageing fast.”Although he clearly remains a very skillful bowler, he seems to be ageing quickly and it was always asking a lot for a guy who has barely bowled with the red ball in recent months to come through unscathed here.”It’s why I believe this England side will eventually overtake India in Test cricket. Their bowlers are always well-prepared, they get the right amount of rest and they don’t play in the IPL. England know how to peak,” he said. But Hussain still gave India the upperhand in the series.”That’s not to say India won’t win this series, because they still have loads of quality in their team, but this is not the start they needed,” he said. With inputs from PTI
And we’re underway! Coach Gundy talks season opener, o-line, comes out pro pom-pom and more!Early Starters and the Opener• Sporting the Ticket City Cactus Bowl shirt immediately getting grief for The Gullet. “Yeah, I probably need to trim it up at some point before Christmas. Not much for an opening statement; but, we’re a healthy football team, practice has been going really well and we’re excited to play a game.”• Talks about the six freshmen that will probably play in the first game, or at least early in the season. Who are they? “Well the guys I’ve given you. I hope I don’t forget any names. We’ve got Bundage, he could play; we’ve got AJ Green; Stoner could play, Obi…there should be one more. Oh yeah, 27 could play in a game.” Coach is back!• Asked if Justice Hill (27) compares with Hunter, Toston and Randle regarding earning playing time as a freshman: “I’d be careful comparing him to those guys. They all three played in the NFL, or still play. He’s done very well in camp. We think the three or four we have now are better than what we were using last year with two or three.”• Coach says we’ve got three or four solid running-backs, but Jeff Carr’s name wasn’t mentioned. What’s his status? “Well, it should be. I mean, he’ll be in the mix.”• Do you foresee using five backs or would you like to see that position “skinny up”? “I would say we would need to use fewer backs at certain positions.” What? “We’ve got guys who can do certain things in our offense. A couple of them will be in two-back sets, and a couple of them won’t be in two-back sets. It’s kind of like what they do in the NBA. There’s guys we have that are really good in certain plays we have and may not be so good in others so…it makes it tougher on Yurcich, but we have to use the guys we have to make our running game better.”• Where are the next challenges for this team even with all the returning players? “We need to improve in gap responsibility and facing different styles of offense. This first offense will be completely different than what we see when we get into conference play.”• How does facing Southeast Louisiana’s option offense rank for an opener? “Option football is arguably the best style of offense there ever was or ever is, has been, however you want to look at it. So it’s a challenge because our team hasn’t seen any option football in the preseason.” So Gundy! Some QB Talk• How comfortable are you with Taylor Cornelius if Mason goes down? “Well, we’re comfortable because he’s the guy. We don’t have a choice. We all know that until we get out there and play you don’t know how you’re going to react, but he understands the program – he’s made plays.”• Is the hope right now to redshirt Wudtee and allow him to grow a little bit? “He’s getting quality work. Kolar’s getting work. But, Taylor (Corneilson) gets most of the reps in case we were to need somebody. But we’re trying to bring the other guys along – we’re not sure what we would do with him at this point.”Offensive Line• How has moving Marcus Keyes into the starting lineup made the line better? “We feel like he gives us a little more athleticism at that part – or at that point, I should say. He’s immature. He hasn’t played. But, we feel like that in the long run he gives us more than what we had.”• “We could very well play eight guys in the first game in the offensive line…with two or three guys getting 20 to 30 snaps.”• Can you get 150-175 yards out of your tailbacks? “Yeah, I don’t have any idea. I have in my mind what I feel like that we’re capable of if everybody’s healthy, and we see improvement on the offensive line, and if they play what would be a balanced defense and mix it up, then we need to rush for 125 yards a game. Now that sounds minimal but you have to look at where we were the last two years. 125 yards a game would have been like Christmas for us.”• Have you had to look close and hard for improvement in the offensive line or has it been obvious? “Well I look close and hard at it every day. It’s really the only thing I coach and am involved with. And I’ve seen improvement. We need to make our greatest strides from last season to this season in covering guys up and running the football.”Random Tidbits• Chris Carson – “Most two-year players we bring in, on a scale of 1 to 10, in their first year, if they’re doing ok, they’re about a 4. Then, based on their talent, go from a 7 to an 8. I think he’s made the transition from that level to this level. He has a better feel for our offense.”• Kickers – “We’ve got a couple guys that are doing some kicking for us in practice. We’re in a competition that’s going to end next Wednesday and that way we’ll know who’s going to kick off.”• What is this team’s greatest strength? “Have to say that our overall maturity at key positions should help us early in the season compared to where we were at last year.” Don’t you think Mason Rudolph is your greatest strength? “That’s the maturity at the key position I was referring to.”• Good to have first three games at home? “I’m excited for the fans and the students about playing at home in September. I think it’s important to start the season that way. I think it’s good for season ticket sales, the students, it generates a lot of interest. People are ready for college football.”• In favor of striping the stadium for the Pitt game? “I’m in favor of striping the stadium. I’m in favor of using pom-poms. I think that’s part of college football that builds your fan base. It excites the students.”• And finally… the app!! “We’ve developed, I think, the first head football coach app. It will be a Coach Gundy app. You can download it and put it on your phone and get instant information on everything we’re doing here – videos, interviews, roster, photos, schedule, NFL players, camp information, pictures – what? – yeah, there’ll probably be a mullet watch. Kwasi Thompson visited Washington D.C. this past Friday where he addressed participants in a Small Business Development Center Study Tour, sponsored by The Organization of American States.Addressing participants from throughout the Caribbean, OAS officials and others, the Minister said he was pleased to represent The Bahamas at the event and that it was particularly important for him to see the implementation of the program in The Bahamas and especially on the island of Grand Bahama. He told the assembly that the current administration is focused on small business assistance and that development of the program will help to fulfill that commitment.Minister Thompson also recalled that it was only a few short months ago that The Bahamas signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the OAS to become part of the cooperation programme being offered through the United States Permanent Mission to the OAS in conjunction with the University of Texas in San Antonio.“The Bahamas is an active member of the OAS in all areas and particularly in the affairs of the Secretariat for Integral Development,” he told the gathering.Further, he informed that The Bahamas has a small and open economy, primarily driven by two sectors, tourism and financial services, with tourism being the dominant sector contributing better than 45% of the country’s gross domestic product. The Grand Bahama Minister advised that while most economic activities are concentrated on the country’s most populated island, New Providence, that Grand Bahama, the second most populated island hosts one of the first free ports in the world, a special economic zone.He also stressed that the island is home to one of the largest container shipping facilities on the eastern seaboard with the capacity to service approximately 1.5 million twenty-foot container units a year including the capacity to service 750 refrigerated units. Also, that the island is home of the Grand Bahama Shipyard, one of the largest centers for dry-docking and afloat services for repairs, refit, refurbishment and revitalization. The Minister also advised that our government recognizes that in order to accelerate the country’s economic growth, steps need to be taken to further develop an environment which focuses on competitiveness, ease of doing business and macroeconomic stability.“My Government also recognizes that the growth and expansion of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises or MSMEs is key to the country’s growth success and we are creating an environment which encourages innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit of the people.“To be successful, this will take a coordinated approach targeted at addressing the needs of the MSME sector of the economy,” he said.Continuing, he informed that to stimulate the growth of MSMEs, previous governments had established agencies targeted at supporting the development of those enterprises. Some of the key agencies according to Mr. Thompson included the Bahamas Agricultural & Industrial Corporation, the Bahamas Entrepreneurial Venture Capital Fund and the Bahamas Development Bank.He also informed that representatives from those agencies had traveled to Washington for the event also.“The aim of these agencies is to encourage the creation, expansion and promotion of SMEs through the provision of business incubation support services, resources such as industrial land at concessionary rates, access to development funding, access to buyers’ market and the provision of monitoring and evaluation services for small businesses,” he said.Mr. Thompson was also keen on pointing out that “although our Government has only been in office for approximate two months, I am pleased that our Government has agreed to continue the important process of establishing two Small Business Development Centers with support of the US Permanent Mission to the OAS, to better coordinate the efforts of existing agencies which support SME development.“The creation of such centers was a key recommendation of the country’s National Development Plan. The Centers will also develop a framework that will help to increase collaboration and networking between SMEs.“Our plan calls for the Small Business Development Centers to be based at two campuses of the University of The Bahamas in New Providence and Grand Bahama and comprised of a team of professionals from a variety of sectors namely, the public sector, academia, agencies responsible for small business development and the Chamber of Commerce,” he stated.According to the Minister the Center will have the advantage of accessing a cadre of qualified faculty and global network of resources aimed at small business growth. He said that members of the team have in the past several months been engaged in active dialogue and training with personnel from the Small Business Development Center of the University of Texas.“We are pleased that the team has already developed a Strategic and Operational Plan which will be implemented in both Grand Bahama and New Providence before the end of 2017 and will be subsequently launched in our Family Islands in the near future.“The plan includes the organizational structure of the Center and the roles and responsibilities of key personnel. Once fully implemented it is our vision that the Center will be the leading driver of economic growth for small businesses by empowering entrepreneurial development throughout The Bahamas.“We anticipate that the Small Business Development Centre Model that The Bahamas will be implementing over the next few months will not only grow and expand SMEs, but will also create further opportunities for partnerships between domestic and international businesses, attracting more investment into the country,” he said.#magneticmedianews Electricity Cost of Service Study among the big agenda items at September 11 Cabinet meeting
