New Panama Canal offers new opportunities for U.S. agriculture

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Almost one-third of U.S. corn, wheat and soybeans now transit the Panama Canal to reach Asian markets. Now, with the new $6 billion Panama Canal expansion completed, cargo capacity will double and could shorten travel distance from the U.S. Gulf Coast to Asia by some 5,000 nautical miles and seven to nine days.“The original canal, which was complete 102 years ago, has been well maintained but the size of the locks no longer met the needs of global commerce, especially the size of ships,” said Mike Steenhoek, Executive Director of the Soy Transportation Coalition, who was in Panama for the Grand Opening of the expansion at the end of June. “For the Panama Canal to remain relevant in the 21st Century this new canal and the new larger locks were necessary.”The larger ships, now able to use the Panamanian shortcut, will add additional revenue producing freight which will ultimately reduce the cost, per bushel, to American agriculture’s eventual customer.“The new canal really has the potential to enhance the economics of a host of industries and we feel that agriculture is one of them,” Steenhoek said.Economically speaking, the day of the ground breaking for the new canal expansion 10 years ago and the day that it opened for business are much different. This is a concern for canal investors.“Even after the retraction of the global economy in 2008, we’re still trying to dig ourselves out of it,” Steenhoek said. “The Panama Canal also has competition to keep in mind and currently they do not have an elevated negotiating position with their customers, so they’ll have to really work to remain competitive which is also good for agriculture in the U.S.”With the expansion of the Panama Canal, American commodities like corn and soybeans will be loaded from the key export region of the Mississippi Gulf at almost double the rate, almost 2 million bushels more per vessel, then ships that traveled the original canal.“When you’re operating in a commodity industry like agriculture there’s not a lot of product differentiation between what we produce in the U.S. and what is produced in South America,” Steenhoek said. “Success is largely a function of being able to get products to our customers at the lowered cost and the most reliable fashion. The Panama Canal expansion will help preserve our competitive advantage.”last_img read more

Buildings Will Play a Big Role in the EU’s Carbon-Reduction Plan

first_imgThe European Union has mandated that greenhouse gas emissions over the next 38 years be cut by 80% from 1990 levels. That goal puts significant pressure on many sectors – transportation, utilities, urban planners, and builders, among others – to get their carbon-reduction act together soon. But the building industry, which is cited as a major source of emissions, will have to be especially agile in addressing energy efficiency if the EU is going to meet its target, a recent analysis points out.By 2050, greenhouse gas emissions of the EU’s building stock will have to be 88% to 91% below 1990s levels, according to a study by the Brussels-based Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE), titled “Principles for Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings: Paving the Way for Effective Implementation of Policy Requirements.”The document driving these policy requirements is the EU’s Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD), which imposes what it calls a “nearly zero-energy building,” or nZEB, standard on all new public buildings beginning in 2019 and on all buildings (including homes) beginning in 2021. The EU is leaving it up to member states to draw up nZEB regulations suitable for their climate and other regional conditions, but the directive does define, in general terms, an nZEB as a “building that has a very high energy performance…. The nearly zero or very low amount of energy required should to a very significant extent be covered by energy from renewable sources, including renewable energy produced onsite or nearby.”Balancing efficiency and renewablesThe BPIE analysis is intended to highlight practical approaches states can take as the EU develops a more-specific definition for nZEBs. BPIE also looks at key features of existing nZEBs and offers technical solutions that stakeholders can apply as they try to shape their nZEB markets. Member states have until the end of next year to formalize their nZEB definitions, regulations, and carbon-reduction targets, which they’ll then submit to the European Commission. One issue that will come into play in designing and building each project: how to determine the optimal balance between energy efficiency and renewable energy – a balance that will be struck in part, BPIE notes, by weighing climate-influenced energy demand, financing options, and the performance of existing low-energy buildings. BPIE also notes that while EU members may now have different ways of calculating building performance, the EU will have to agree on a single calculation method.Given the EU’s management of its financial tribulations lately, it will be interesting to see how quickly member states can come up with a coherent and aggressive nZEB definition.last_img read more

Why Do My Salespeople Turnover?

first_imgThe sales leader asked a question to a group of us on the stage at the OutBound Conference. He asked, “How do I hire salespeople that won’t turnover.” Because of the limited time we had remaining, I didn’t answer the question, but it does require an answer. There are two ways to look at your results in an area like this. The first way is to assume that the salespeople are to blame. The second way is to assume that you are to blame. Only one of these ways of viewing this challenges is helpful improving your results.Nothing Is My FaultIf you believe that your salespeople are all bad, then hiring another bunch of salespeople isn’t going to improve your results. The next group is going to be equally bad. If nothing is your fault, then there is nothing you can change. You surely won’t believe that you are the source of the problem. How could you be? You’re not the one failing to sell.Absolving yourself of responsibility only ensures that you turn over more salespeople. How could it be otherwise when you are not to blame and there is nothing you can do?Everything Is My FaultIf it’s your fault that the salespeople you hire are turning over, then you are empowered to do something about it.It may be that your hiring process isn’t good, but that isn’t as likely as another reason your salespeople turnover. The more likely reason is that you aren’t as committed to their success as you need to be. The likely reason they turnover is that they aren’t being well led, well managed, and well coached. It’s also likely that they aren’t being trained and developed to succeed in sales. If I had to bet, I’d bet the salespeople are failing due to neglect in these areas before I would look to any other factor.General US Grant was the fourth General to command the Union Army. The enemy didn’t change, nor did the terrain. The resources didn’t change, nor did the Colonels and Captains. The only factor that changed was the leader. Essential Reading! Oklahoma State has seven of them ever. Ever! Four of those have come in the last seven seasons with a chance on Thursday to make that five in seven as the Pokes try to move to 10-3 in 2016 in the Alamo Bowl against Colorado. A quick look at some of the winningest teams of the last few years reveals good company for Mike Gundy and Co.Here are all the teams with 5+ 10-win seasons in the last seven years (since 2010).Alabama: 7Ohio State: 6Clemson: 6Oklahoma: 6Florida State: 5 (6 if it beats Michigan)Stanford: 5Boise State: 5Wisconsin: 5Oregon: 5Michigan State: 5Northern Illinois: 5OSU is the only team during bowl season that has a chance to join this list. LSU isn’t on it. Neither is USC. Not TCU. Not Baylor. Not Louisville, Georgia or Nebraska.“It’s big,” said offensive lineman Zach Crabtree on Tuesday. “It’s always something. I remember coming in here and Coach Gundy talking about that from day one. Any time you can hit double-digit wins at this level, it’s huge. Not many people in the country win 10 games a year, and so this game has big-time implications on it for us. We want this 10th win. It means a lot. It’s just the middle level of success, just puts you in elite company, and we’re there, and we want to stay there.”“Just for me, being here five years and having a chance to have three 10-win seasons, that’s unbelievable,” added senior receiver Austin Hays. “There’s probably I think Coach Gundy told us the other day, there’s only eight or nine teams in the last four years that have won more games than we have, and to be a part of this has just been so special, and then for the guys coming back, to beat a top-10 team in Colorado and to make that our double-digit win would just be huge for the guys coming back, to create that momentum going forward and to propel them into having a great year next year.”Defensive coordinator Glenn Spencer stunningly downplayed the achievement before it has been completed.“I don’t like to reflect and I don’t like to kind of summarize things until it’s all said and done, because if we don’t do it, we’ll be sitting back and saying, why couldn’t we get 10,” said Spencer. “But without skirting your question, we’ve had a string of success around here, and I try to get these guys just to think about the next game, and maybe when their career is over, look back and kind of see the superlatives.“I guess we just love to do things right. We love to win the right way. I loved for these guys to leave our program knowing that they’ve gained a lot about life, about being a brother, about sacrifice, and then if you can win 10 games and win bowl games, that’s an awesome thing, too. So I don’t want to diminish that at all. But I just love the process to go through with these young men.”When you win it leads to more winning. Success breeds success as Spencer said. Because success is what the future loves.last_img read more

ESPN Ranks Oklahoma State in Top 10 of Way-Too-Early 2017 Top 25

Clemson knocked off Alabama in the most dramatic fashion possible with a last-second Deshaun Watson touchdown to down the mighty Crimson Tide.So now we look ahead to 2017.And as we sit in early January, the outlook is bright for Oklahoma State. Athlon Sports ranked the Cowboys as a No. 11 team in its way-too-early 2017 projection. And ESPN has even higher preseason expectations of Oklahoma State, who they ranked as No. 7 in its list released on Monday night. From ESPN:Outlook: The Pokes will have to rebuild their defense after losing top tacklers Jordan Sterns and Devante Averette plus star defensive tackle Vincent Taylor, who is entering the NFL draft as a junior. But with quarterback Mason Rudolph and receiver James Washington announcing they’ll return for their senior seasons, Oklahoma State might have one of the country’s most high-powered offenses in 2017. Coach Mike Gundy has guided the Pokes to 10-win seasons in five of the past seven years, and after back-to-back second-place finishes in the Big 12, they might be ready to challenge Oklahoma for the title. They’ll get to play the Sooners at home in the Bedlam game next season, and the Pokes will also host TCU, Baylor and Kansas State in Big 12 play.Interestingly, ESPN seems to be the highest on OSU in the Big 12. They ranked Oklahoma on down the list at No. 10, noting the losses of Joe Mixon, Samaje Perine and Dede Westbrook being difficult to replace from its most recent Big 12 title season.Expectations for 2017 will be high, indeed. And the media appear to be hopping on board with Mason Rudolph and Co. early.last_img read more

However, a treble remains a distinct possibility if they can overcome the Gunners. They will have confidence that they can do so, having already dismantled Wenger’s side at the Etihad earlier this season, beating them 3-1, but, at the same time, they will not have forgotten last season’s FA Cup semi-final, in which Arsenal emerged victorious.A win for City will see Guardiola claim his first ever trophy since arriving in England in 2016, but an Arsenal win will also be a first for his counterpart Wenger, who has never hoisted the cup over his head in his two-decade-plus reign in North London.Arsenal last won the competition 25 years ago in 1993 when George Graham was at the helm and a triumph would see the Frenchman add it to a trophy cabinet that contains seven FA Cups and three Premier League titles. Not only that, but it would have the effect of ensuring continental football in the form of the Europa League and adding a silver lining to a season that has been beset with a myriad of problems.last_img read more
