Fox’s Howard Kurtz compares GSA stonewalling of Biden to Whoopi Goldberg being mean

first_imgBecause once you’ve compared a government-wide ban prohibiting members of the next administration’s transition team from so much as entering federal buildings to a television talk show host making riffs, you have both sides yourself, orbital cannon version, into the Earth’s asthenosphere. We are likely to get quite a bit of this, in coming weeks. Yes, fascist legislators in several states are contemplating how to strip their citizens of their votes and instead allocate their own electors to Dear Leader—but Randy Rainbow released a new song that made people who have Trump flags permanently mounted to their cargoless pickup trucks sad. It is upsetting that the United States president, a deluded malignant narcissist whose incompetence has killed a quarter million, is obsessively broadcasting conspiracy theories in an attempt to undermine a democratic election that upset him, but a political cartoonist has colored Trump in with far too orange a hue—so who is the real monster here, when all is said and done?To political journalists as a whole, both sides is an addiction more powerful than crack. Combine it with a Fox News paycheck and several floors of the Fox building solely dedicated to finding new things non-conservatives have done that their audience should be outraged by, though, and it begins to look something like this.- Advertisement – It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Good times, good times.Kurtz defended his tweet to the many, many mockers, sniffily telling them to read his Fox News article rather than, um, the “both sides” comparison he himself chose to highlight, but ’twas all for naught.- Advertisement – – Advertisement –last_img read more

Trump’s stonewalling of Biden’s transition team threatens national security, Democrats say.

first_imgMr. Biden’s decades of experience in Washington will likely soften those consequences, the Democrats said.Deprived of access to secure government communications by the Trump administration, Mr. Biden’s team of more than 500 former officials and outside experts has embraced workarounds, talking over encrypted apps like Signal to shield their conversations from the Chinese, meeting in outdoor coffee shops with government officials they once worked alongside. The conversations are circumspect, both because of rules on both sides limiting how much information Mr. Biden’s team can seek and how much executive branch officials are allowed to say, participants said. In many ways, what is happening now, officials said, is a reverse of four years ago — when President Barack Obama’s team was ready with detailed briefings and simulations of potential crises (including a pandemic flu), and Mr. Trump’s advisers were unwilling to receive them. Now, Mr. Biden has loaded his transition team with many of the same officials who were ready to brief the Trump appointees. It may be weeks until Mr. Biden’s so-called agency review teams, made up of longtime government officials with deep roots in the bureaucracy, are let into the government departments that a Biden administration will run starting at noon on Jan. 20. Some issues can wait until a formal ascertainment is declared, giving them access to the offices and classified material.Mr. Biden’s aides say they have been warned not to get into detailed conversations with government officials, even career officials, until they receive the formal approval that transition has begun. But there is no prohibition on talking with officials who worked for the Trump administration and left. And many informal conversations between former political officials and those career government officials who stayed on have been going on for four years — and never really stopped. The last remaining arms control treaty between the United States and Russia, called New START, expires days after the inauguration. Mr. Biden has expressed a willingness to renew it, but his national security staff has had no access to the detailed discussions between the national security adviser, Robert C. O’Brien, and his Kremlin counterpart, or a team of State Department negotiators who have dealt with Russia on questions like inspections and verification.- Advertisement – Mr. Biden was forced to use open lines when foreign leaders call to congratulate him, as the Japanese prime minister and South Korean president did on Wednesday. With Mr. Trump unwilling to recognize the election result and authorize the “ascertainment” that allows formal transition to begin, the White House Communications Agency is forbidden to run secure lines to Mr. Biden’s house in Delaware.- Advertisement – – Advertisement – Democratic congressional leaders warned that President Trump’s stonewalling is already doing damage to the country’s ability to deal with foreign leaders — President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr. made his first contacts on unsecured telephone lines — and plans for how to handle the most high-risk period in the spread of the coronavirus and bolster the economic recovery.“It is most unfortunate that the Republicans have decided that they will not respect the will of the people, and let me just say: It’s like the house is burning down and they just refused to throw water on it,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California said.- Advertisement –last_img read more

Huawei hopes Biden brings a ‘reset’ to relations

first_imgThe Trump administration announced sanctions against China’s Huawei in August that effectively cut off the company from some technology it got from the United States. The measures added to a slew of actions the U.S. has taken in the past 15 months against Huawei, which it has accused of being a national security risk. Huawei refutes that allegation. – Advertisement – U.S. sanctions have put pressure on the company’s margins. For the first nine months of the year, revenue totaled 671.3 billion yuan ($98.57 billion), up 9.9% from the 610.8 billion yuan reported in the same period last year. That’s a significant slowdown in growth — in the first nine months of 2019, Huawei’s revenue grew by 24.4%.Meanwhile, Huawei’s net profit margin came in at 8% for the first nine months of the year, down from 8.7% in the same period last year.Like the United States, a rising number of countries including Sweden, France and the UK have banned Huawei from their 5G networks on security grounds.- Advertisement – “Of, course under the previous administration, we had a lot of challenges,” Scanlan said in apparent reference to the Trump White House. Huawei has been “working through those challenges” with customers and suppliers, said Scanlan, who spoke to CNBC as part of the annual East Tech West conference.Despite those problems, Huawei remains “optimistic” the two sides can resolve their differences. “We would welcome more dialogue,” said Scanlan, who added that “with dialogue comes understanding, then comes trust, and then people can do business together.”Margin pressure- Advertisement –center_img Scanlan sought to downplay “trust” issues countries may have about Huawei gear, insisting the company has been open in its dealings with governments globally.Scanlan underlined if a government “wants to inspect the products, then we show the products, we show everything that’s inside the products.”“They can bring their experts to us or us to them, and we can sit down and demonstrate that the product is trustworthy,” he said.“We do that across the world,” he said. Huawei hopes to “reset” relations with the United States under Joe Biden’s presidential administration, according to a senior executive at the telecom equipment and mobile phone giant. Paul Scanlan, chief technology officer at Huawei Carrier Business Group, told CNBC’s Arjun Kharpal that when there “is a change in government, there is always the opportunity to reset relationships. Florida Lawyer Charged With Extorting N.F.L. Player in Robbery Case

first_imgMr. Baker, 23, whom the Giants selected as the 30th overall pick of the 2019 N.F.L. draft and started in 15 of 16 games in his rookie season last year, was charged on Aug. 5 with four counts of armed robbery and four counts of aggravated assault. He was released by the team in early September. On Monday, Broward County prosecutors dropped all charges against Mr. Baker.- Advertisement – The charges stem from the incident in May in Miramar, Fla., where, witnesses claimed, three men robbed people at a cookout of $70,000 in cash and jewelry after one of the men pulled a gun. The witnesses identified New York Giants cornerback DeAndre Baker, Seattle Seahawks safety Quinton Dunbar and a man wearing a red mask as the perpetrators. The man in the red mask was never identified, and charges against Mr. Dunbar were dropped in August, according to The Miami Herald. The lawyer representing three men who accused two N.F.L. players of robbery and assault in Florida was arrested on Monday morning and charged with attempting to extort roughly $800,000 from one of the athletes in exchange for having his clients alter their testimony.Four men accused the players of robbing them at gunpoint at a cookout on May 13, but three of them later recanted their testimony and the fourth refused to answer prosecutors’ questions, according to a statement from the Broward County state attorney.- Advertisement – The Broward County Sheriff’s Office said on Monday that investigators believed that Mr. Dean wanted Mr. Baker to pay each of his clients more than $266,000 in exchange for either changing their testimony or refusing to cooperate further with prosecutors in the case. “Evidence in the case reveals that Dean told Baker’s attorney that his clients would do ‘anything you want, so long as the money is right,’” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.Mr. Dean was arrested by Broward County sheriff’s deputies and U.S. marshals in North Miami Beach early Monday morning.Citing a continuing investigation by the Broward State Attorney’s Office and the Broward Sheriff’s Office, a spokeswoman for Broward County declined to comment further about the case against Mr. Dean.Bradford Cohen, Mr. Baker’s lawyer, said on Monday that his client was the victim of a shakedown, and that Mr. Dean had originally sought $1.5 million. No money ever changed hands, Mr. Cohen said.“These guys wanted money to go away,” Mr. Cohen said of the men who accused Mr. Baker, noting that the accusers’ testimony changed over time. “I hope the N.F.L. will look at this case and let cases play out before they decide to suspend a player.”Asked why the case was filed against Mr. Baker when there supposedly were dubious witnesses, Mr. Cohen said: “Because it was a high-profile case. Your fame is a detriment when you have a criminal case against you.” A spokesperson for the New York Giants declined to comment via email. Mr. Dunbar, 28, still plays for the Seattle Seahawks, but the team announced on Nov. 13 that he was out with a knee injury. The case against Mr. Baker unraveled as the men who accused him began to change their story, or became uncooperative altogether. According to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Dean came under investigation in August after information emerged that he was trying to extort Mr. Baker.“The alleged victims and the known witnesses have become uncooperative and their credibility is inalterably tarnished,” Assistant State Attorney Paul R. Valcore said in a statement on Monday. One of Mr. Baker’s accusers refused to answer questions, and prosecutors moved to have that accuser held in contempt of court, Mr. Valcore said. William A. Dean, 50, the managing partner of the Florida law firm Ford, Dean & Rotundo, was charged in Broward County on Monday with soliciting payments for three clients in exchange for their changing their testimony or ceasing to cooperate with prosecutors. A woman who answered the phone at Ford, Dean & Rotundo said Mr. Dean was unavailable to speak. Further calls asking the firm for comment on Mr. Dean’s arrest resulted in the line being disconnected. – Advertisement – William DeanCredit…Broward County Sheriff’s Office – Advertisement –last_img read more

Vietnam reports 3 avian flu cases, says virus is changing

first_imgApr 14, 2005 (CIDRAP News) –Vietnamese officials today announced that three more human cases of H5N1 influenza have occurred since April 2 and said the virus appears to be changing into a less virulent, faster-spreading form. One of the patients, a 21-year-old woman from the northern province of Quang Ninh, is co-infected with HIV and H5N1, Reuters news service reported today. She was hospitalized in late March with fever and coughing, Nguyen Van Thich, head of the Center for Preventive Medicine in Quang Ninh, told Reuters. He described the woman as having no fever and being in stable condition. The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was seeking more information on her case from Vietnam.”There are possible public-health implications, including the potential in any person with immunodeficiency to display greater virus excretion and more chronic infection,” said Peter Cordingley, spokesman for the WHO’s Western Pacific Regional Office in Manila, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP). “We need to study such patients carefully and encourage Vietnamese clinicians to do so and share their findings.”The WHO said the Vietnamese government had notified it of eight confirmed H5N1 cases, although it is not clear whether the woman from Quang Ninh was among them. Two cases mentioned in a WHO news release today involve people from the northern provinces of Hung Yen and Ha Tay who are still alive, the WHO announced, without giving any other details about the patients.”The other six cases are thought to have been detected prior to 2 April,” the WHO news release said. “WHO is seeking further details from the authorities on (these) six cases.”The numbers bring Vietnam’s unofficial tally to 41 cases from 18 cities and provinces since the current outbreak began in mid-December. Of those cases, 16 people have died and 6 remain under medical care, the WHO said.Dr. Nguyen Tran Hien, director of Vietnam’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, was quoted in state media today as saying that tests on the H5N1 virus show it is changing. Recent tests indicate its virulence has decreased but it is spreading more quickly, according to his remarks as reported by Reuters. Some samples of the virus have been sent for more testing in the United States, Hien added. Final results are expected later this month.Despite the continued human cases of H5N1 flu, the Vietnamese agriculture ministry reported that poultry outbreaks have greatly declined. The only reported outbreaks are in the southern province of Tra Vinh, in the Mekong Delta, the Reuters story noted.See also: WHO news releasehttp://www.who.int/csr/don/2005_04_14/en/last_img read more

Days of Adriatic squid in Northwestern Istria as a real guide to the development of our tourism

Adriatic Squid Days, now a traditional gourmet event, is returning to Northwestern Istria. From 1 December to 7 January, visitors to the Croatian capital of wine and outstanding culinary tradition will be able to enjoy a number of traditional and unconventional Adriatic squid dishes. This gourmet event, in addition to being an additional motive for visiting northwestern Istria during the Christmas holidays, seeks to valorize extraordinary squid from the Adriatic Sea which is hunted precisely in the winter. It aims to raise awareness of their value in the kitchen and encourages caterers to devise new, creative recipes based on this seafood. With emphasis on Adriatic squid, not the one from Patagonia, which in combination with modern cuisine are presented in an attractive way. And that is exactly the key to success and the very essence of tourism. Selling an authentic story. “Never forget who you are, what you are and where you come from, nor forget your knowledge of local products. I would not want Croatian chefs to make the same mistake as Italian or Spanish, who try to satisfy tourists and forget the tradition”Said French chef Lionel Levy with a Michelin star in Osijek after the workshop organized by the CNTB, where he literally opened the eyes of the audience and showed how local food can make a top presentation of dishes that belong to the very top of world cuisine. You just need to add innovation, presentation creation and respect local ingredients. The combination of tradition and modernity, that is the main message, and that it is certainly possible, he presented in a practical way – perk from the fish in an innovative and different way.”It is important to protect and defend the recipes of your ancestors, otherwise they will get lost. Defend the recipes of your ancestors!Levy concluded. A strong message from chef Lionel Levy that can certainly be interpreted as the philosophy of the whole tourism because that is exactly the very meaning of tourism. People travel to get to know new ways and culture of living, and authenticity is the very essence of tourism. We seem to be ashamed of our history, traditions, identity, way of life, etc.… we have to start respecting ourselves, so that others can respect us, and the tourism workers who create our tourism product are not aware that this is our biggest advantage, our incredible diversity. and authenticity. We constantly strive to be some copies, and figuratively we sell French wine to the French.Days of Adriatic squid in IstriaThat is why the Days of Adriatic Squid, as well as all other gastronomic events and tourist stories, were small or large, which respect the tradition of extremely important, long-term sustainable and a real signpost in which direction our tourism must develop. It must be our main tourist product – our authentic story. We can learn so many lessons from this example, and the most important one is to stimulate the local economy, which is the meaning of tourism, to increase tourist spending and disperse to as many participants as possible at the local level, not to finance imported products. It is insane to import tomatoes, lettuce, etc.… We are thus destroying our economy and our resource, and we are only dealing with form through rental tourism, not content. And that is not sustainable in the long run, which we can see day by day in any of our tourist destinations. Everyone loses, and even hotels in the end because the motive for coming is not accommodation, but diverse, quality and authentic content.Because I wonder why someone from Zagreb would come to Istria to eat a Zagreb steak? Of course not. This is exactly what they are aware of in Istria, and the most important interest of the guests goes in favor of that, so from year to year the event attracts more and more guests from the entire region. “Istria is a destination that has a rich offer for the whole year, and with this event we confirm that the season in our country never really ends. Everyone who decides to visit Istria before Christmas will be able to enjoy our rich tourist offer in which the Days of Adriatic Squid are the icing on the cake. Last year’s experiences have shown that such events are extremely popular, because they are rich and interesting, and at the same time Istria at this time of year provides an opportunity for a true vacation for everyone who needs it.”, Said Michelle Babić, director of the office of the Tourist Board of the Municipality of Brtonigla.Delicious dishes of this prominent delicacy whose quality surpasses squid from other seas, this year will be prepared by as many as ten local restaurants that have prepared promotional prices for this occasion. Top chefs have also designed new creative recipes for their visitors in order to offer dishes for everyone’s taste. The squid is thus composed in several sequences, in more spicy and lighter variants and in combination with interesting side dishes. Exactly what chef Levy said, a combination of tradition and modern interpretation of food. “Our goal is to show visitors that squid, with a little imagination and creativity, can find a place on a plate for any occasion. I believe that our visitors will know how to recognize this and that they will be happy to return to us in the future, but also that they will dare to experiment in their own kitchen based on our creations.”, Said Anton Kernjus from the tavern Astarea. Inspirational squid dishes as part of this event are prepared in taverns and restaurants Astarea from Brtonigla, Rondo and Lux Casino Hotel Mulino from Buje, Giovanni and San Bendetto from Novigrad, Buščina, Melon and Nono from Umag and Toni and Vila Vilola from Savudrija. See a list and locations of all restaurants here.During the year, northwestern Istria hosts as many as four different gourmet events in which it brings visitors closer to Istrian specialties, such as shellfish, asparagus and fish leaf. Although these events are held outside the summer months, from year to year there is an increase in attendance, which further confirms that Istria has positioned itself as a year-round destination that offers its visitors a rich culture and customs that guests are always happy to meet. Some will say that it is easy for Istrians and they again, but they see only the tip of the iceberg and forgetting how tourism in Istria has been developing strategically for years, and how they have successfully combined what is imperative – local tradition and culture and authentic tourist product . We all have the same opportunities, and it is only a question of our will and proactivity, and the answer to the main question: Do we want tourism or not?If the answer is yes, then we must start dealing with tourism strategically and sustainably.last_img read more
